Welcome to moms magic fridge. My name is Janice and I have been married to my best friend now for over 20 years and we have two boys. Through these years we made each other a promise to try and never fight over money issues. I will not say we never had any issues as we are still living almost paycheck to pay check. But we never blamed each other for the problem. Yes we got frustrated and angry but not at each other. Communication is key and the willingness to listen.

So with that little insight into my personal life let’s talk about how we (my husband and I) worked through the no money and keeping food on the table.

Side note we pulled, showed and did demonstrations with teams of oxen and our boys did 4H with their teams as well. So raising our own meat was an extension of what we already had going for our family.

  1. We decided to get creative with what food we had.
  2. Started a garden (favorite dinner was run it through the garden pizza)
  3. Shopped sales and clipped coupons
  4. Swallowed our pride (mostly connected to what we thought other people would think) and signed up for WIC (woman infants and children) and years later signed up for SNAP (food stamps)
  5. Started raising our own meat (beef, chicken, and turkeys) also had laying chickens for eggs.
  6. I started a small baking business and sold baked goods at the local farmers markets and special orders. Then changed my baking business to a more shelf stable product and made beer, wine and fruit jellies.
  7. Because I had my ServSafe certification and had a hard time finding anyone in my area to get re-certified with I researched how to be that person. This gave me another opportunity to make money as well.
  8. I utilized leftovers a lot into new meals
  9. With my certified kitchen for the baked goods and jellies I was able to get a card for my local restaurant supplier and buying bulk food became even easier
  10. Still working on it to this day…

I was never willing to give up and worked hard to make sure we never went without. Some days for awhile it might not have been what we wanted to eat but we never went without.

Thank You,

Janice
